I wonder if anyone remembers my uncle Clifford (Cliff) Russell , born 1932, who was at RAF Greatworth during the 1950's. I would love to be able to help him bring back some memories.

Hi Im currently in the process of completing a book with retired Colonel Charles Halt on the mysterious events that took place oustide RAF Woodbridge in December 1980. I have found a reference to an incidnet that was said to have occurred at 8.15pm in?( RAF Greatworth Oxon when it was reported a man and woman sighted an object for 20minutes  described as mulit shaped showing square lights which according to Contact UK UFO Group left the couple feeling very frightened. As a retired Police Officer who had no such interest after leaving the West Mids Police in 1995, there wasa time I would have laughed at such reports not know! Its taken me 20 years just to write up the period 1910-1990!

If anyone has knowledge of this or other strange events please contact me on 0121.445.0340 or email [email protected] Thanks

There are a couple of members living within the Greatworth area Victoria, put up yopur profile to kick off the membership and you should be able to PM them? Plus a blog?

I discovered this site by accident, and very pleased to have done so.

In the 60s I worked for F.I.D.S. (Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, as it was when I joined), and later re-named British Antarctic Survey, as a wireless operator in Stanley.

We had a Marconi1 SWB 11Q, a smaller one, was it the SWB 9? and a More modern Marconi "TGS". This had a remote control unit in the receiving room at the east of town. The transmitters and aerial farm

I was married at RAF Stafford in October 1965 but did not expect to get a MQ very soon so I put in for an exchange posting and one came up at Greatworth with a MQ for almost immediate occupation.  We lived at No 1 Astral Row, now a private house.  I was the Station Clerk, there were I believe about 36 RAF members of staff on the whole camp.  One OMQ occupied by the only officer, Flt Lt DGW Eeles.  There was a combined Mess although when I visited the site some 15 years ago it had been taken over by a local farmer and housed some pigs.  I still have the sign saying "Airmen's Dining Room" above the dining room in my house today!  - Should I re-write that?

I remember that because it was a transmitting station, the aerials interfered with the TV reception.  Only 2 channels then, I believe, Black & White, BBC and ITV.  I am not sure which way round it was but when the 1966 World Cup was being screened someone "no names no packdrill', lowered the power so that we in MQs and parts of the village could watch the match.  Thanks for that!

I seem to remember there were two big banks of transmitters in the main hall.  I expect that the work that they did is now probably done on a laptop computer, hence no need for RAF Greatworth!.

My daughter, Natalie was born in Brackley Cottage Hospital on 20 July 1967.

I remember Fred Chester from the village.  I left Greatworth after about two very happy years of a pretty laid back existence.

Sandra, if you're still the owner of the pub in Greatworth village, otherwise known as "Hookies" I would like you to take a copy my photo of the pub 1964/65 the one that rather looks like an old "sepier" print!
