A Great(worth) Reunion

Posted by Martin on August 12, 2010 at 2:43 PM

An absolutely brilliant day, attended by fifteen stalwarts of yesteryear making this reunion a resounding success. Thanks go to The Inn's Mark and Anne who rose to the occasion splendidly, providing an excellent luncheon for us all, also Everyone we met at the old TX site who not only made us welcome, but gave us a guided tour of their premises too. I am best pleased to have met such a great bunch of folk, without which, such a lovely day would not have been possible. So thank you all, for making our day so enjoyable.

Although I was an outsider, i.e. never served at Greatworth I was none the less made most welcome and enjoyed such fine company. Mike Langrish and myself served on the other end of CAF 1, i.e. in Cyprus. Great teat time . I was with dear Reggie Perks at Locking, sorry and missed him. Good luck to you all.

A great day out and a chance to meet the "Elders" of Greatworth. It's a pity I never met people of my era.
Paul Forge, now in Spain, would have been a real re-union. Cracking all the jokes we used to know.
Thanks again Martin and everyone.
Photos and a video to follow.

This list will be coppied and included in the gallery, okay
Everyone seems agreeable to a `next one', that's fine by me, same place, same time? 2011? Marks system worked well regarding eats, vis arrive, order, tour, then return to lunch and chat. Good formula, we keep to it for next year, the exact date to be arrived at by future discussion/sugestions.
This year was a fantastic turn out, June and I both enjoyed meeting all of you, the weather turned wet, but didn't dampen anyones spirits much, right?
I'll have some more photos to put up in the week and I'm looking forward to some blogs to read, as I'm sure are all those who couldn't make it this year. I've noticed our galleries have had several hundred visits over the last few days and thats excellent.

To Tony Cornish,
Tony, it was good to see you again after all those years, and as the memories unravelled, we recalled travelling together in Joe Payne`s car, usually on a Sunday late evening, from "pick up" in Chesterfield down to the Camp in the early hours of the morning! It would be nice if Joe Payne (MT Driver)and Tom Curran (Ae Rigger) could find the website, best wishes Eric (Rogers).

I was blown away with the day. had a great time and just being there brought back memories I forgot I had. Talking about people we once knew there as well as meeting people I was there with was amazing. I will always remember Tommy Curran and Joe Payne, as well as Eric S. Eric R. and Jeff, who were there to jog the old grey matter. Well done and thanks for all the effort put into it Martin and I am sure was aided and abetted with your wife. God willing I will be able to make the 2012 re-union

I spent a very pleasant day at Greatworth at the reunion. It brought back memories of the happy days i spent there years ago, but also a sadness that people like Jeff Simson were missing. I remember the look of wonder on his face when he opened a big flat wooden box marked SUB STANDARD and gazed at the hand made meter built into it. (Jeff in civvy street had been an instrument maker)
Thanks Martin for the work you did to make the day happen.
Hope to see you all at the next gathering

To Bryan Sharpe,
Bryan it was great to meet you yesterday, it was a coincidence when you told me that you had "inherited" my room 20years or so after me! I too was surprised to find out that it had been made into a Gents Toilet! although on "Kit Inspections" I was often told it resembled a "Sh--house" !!!

Martin, Smashing day! Enjoyed it very much indeed and so did my Grandson Stuart too, it was good to meet up with three old comrades from my time at Greatworth in the late 1950`s (Eric Sumsion, Jeff Patchett, Tony Cornish), and also to make new friends with people who were there a little later. Well done to everyone for coming, Jeff Patchett was even able to claim a pint owed him for 52 years! God willing I will attend next year, see you then, regards from Eric (Rogers)

Absent friends past and pressent, were remembered and toasted as we took our places for lunch in The Inn. Our thoughts went to past comrades no longer here, `Silent Keys' and to those who now live abroad, those too, who live to far away for such a short visit were remembered. Bloggs and photos will soon follow this.
