All aboard? Greatworth Reunion in August?

Posted by Martin on January 17, 2010 at 10:43 AM

There were seven members who showed interest in the "Greatworth Revisited 2010" I've contacted The Inn to see about their facilities. Also I've contacted Greatworth Park's Triple Eight Racing. See the `Greatworth revisited 2010' blogg. If there are other members who find they are interested, it's never too late, but please tell us if you wish to join in, okay? I'm looking for acknowledgement from interested members that intent to join in this "1st Reunion 2010", there, I've done it! It's got a reunion tag! But it is only a proper reunion if it gets enough support! knock knock! This should be a lovely nostalgic day, when the weather gets warmer, June and I will visit Greatworth (we often go near there as we visit Middleton Cheney) and the site to check out the parking and etc.

Categories: 11.00hrs Thursday 12th August 2010 was RAF Greatworth's 1st Reunion at `THE INN'

I visited the village, pub was closed, and had a quick look at the site on 20 June while I was passing by on my return from the Moto GP at Silverstone. The old place changes year by year but still brings many happy memories back to me, see you on the 12th

Right you are Kev. As an aid on the day, a mobile number would be usefull eh? No-one would publish one on here and niether would I, so, if interested parties who are attending this reunion would email me (virgoprestige@yahoo.co.uk) including their mobile number and indicating the number in their party, I in return will reply, with my mobile number included in the reply. I should think that most of us have looked at the interactive map on our site, so we are familiar with our destination? The local area has changed very little over the last half century or so, but it has been a very long time for a lot of us, so it is best if one refreshes ones memory a little beforehand! This and a mobile number should help prevent one getting lost in the wilds of Northamptonshire!!

So we have for definate:- Eric Roggers, Eric Sumsion, Kev Moreland, Jef Patchett, Don & Etta, Mick Langrish, Rob McTait, Mike and myself, all accompanied. If I've left anyone off, please holler and I'll update the `parade roll'. another reminder is on behalf of our overseas friends who cannot attend, bring a camera, video or still and make some notes to blogg with, we'll make a special gallery for the pictures. After all it's 22 years since the last uniformed airman walked the walk at RAF Greatworth and the village, nearly a quarter century!! So it is a worthy event.

Martin, your suggested itinery looks OK to me, I probably need about 2 hours to drive down from South Yorkshire, 11.45 meet up is OK, but I could make it earlier if required, depending on other visitors being in the majority, we will see how it pans out when more people have replied, regards, Eric (Rogers)

This itinery has been sugested for the day, doing and seeing every thing will make a very tight schedule! I think when we meet up a drink and a light lunch will be the order of the day and a full meal later on. allowing for 7 pair of folk eating The Inns logistics, might get stressy? But I'll enquire further, because if we accomodate their abilities with our requirements = pre booking and our close timing?
My time table would be as follows.
Meet at the Inn 11:45
Lunch served 12:00
Drive to domestic site 13:30-13:45
Domestic site external 13:45-14:00
Domestic site internal 14:00-15:00
Drive to Tx hall 15:00-15:05
Tx hall External 15:05-15:30
Tx hall internal
John Austin Furniture 15:30-16:00
Tim Samways 16:00-16:30
Any other Tx hall trader 16:30-17:00

I could get there for 10.00hrs, but how about you others? Please can you answer on here? Once I get this bit together I can arange things further with The Inn and the site.

A reunion sounds like a great idea. I will not be able to make from this side of the pond on this occasion, but hope it all goes well. Look forward to the photos!

Why not go for the 12th of August then, it is supposed to be the glorious day

Triple Eight Racing have sent this reply, (below) to my enquiry, so it seems that we'll get our wish granted on a visit to the old place. pending their current situation, which is fair do's. I'll post a circular to all members, that'll prompt those interested into responding with making a firm date, okay?
best regards
Dear Martin,

We would be delighted to show you around providing we do not have anything confidential going on in the factory. Could you get in touch with us closer to the time of your visit so this can be arranged?

Very best regards

I would suggest that we meet in the week. We will then stand a better chance of getting inside the respective areas during work time

I would echo that too Eric, I'm about to get in touch with those racing guys in the accomodation block, I've been told that they own that building now and I've been given an email addy, looks like we're getting it together okay. Now is this a meeting or a reunion? I'm not really used to organising this sort of thing, I'm more of a biker club guy, y'know tents field'n'beer? Rallies? So I'd really apreciate some feedback in here guys????? Mid week? and which week? Is August a GO GO?

Hi everyone, I've been in touch with THE INN at Greatworth, They tell me that they would be delighted to host a reunion of RAF Greatworth's veterans. They can seat just over 20 odd people for a full meal plus there is a beer garden. The Bank Holiday weekend is already booked as they host a beer festival then, that leaves early to middle August. At this point, can we establish whether to meet `in' the week or at a weekend? Then we can choose a date.
Detailes of THE INN are:- Proprietor: Mark Fleming and Anne Durnion, THE INN, Greatworth, Banbury, Oxon, OX17 2DT

Phone: +44 (0) 1295 710976
I will next contact Greatworth Park for their opinion, it is private property and their tenants private business, so we will have to respect their wishes on the mater of visiting the premises. Perhaps I'll offer some addy space?
