Royal Air Force Greatworth

962 Signals Unit

This site is dedicated to all those servicemen and civilians who served and worked at this RAF transmitter station, from when it was opened in the late 1930's(?) until it finally closed in 1992 and sold. RAF Greatworth was an important part of a global HF comunications system, made necessary by the Cold War. Today, most of these stations have gone*, no longer necessary in todays world, but none of this history should be forgotten and the purpose of this site, is to encourage veterans who were there, to put their experiences on record for for future generations.  * See http://www.raf-signals-command.webs.com/ for more info. Also members are reminded that http://www.raflocking.webs.com/ is now available to those airmen and women who served or trained there.

The Main Entrance off The Welsh Lane, straight on for the Tx Hall, or turn right for the Messes, Naafi and Accomodation Buildings.

RAF Greatworth has also been refered to as Number Two Signals Unit after RAF Stanbridge, which this site previously was listed as, but the only evidence shown, that indicates it's unit number is Eric's 1958 leave pass and this is stamped No 962 Signals Unit and signed by the C.O. If anyone can provide further evidence, suggesting that other unit numbers were used please do.  Information on RAF Greatworth's beginings is an ongoing enquiry, historic information is very sketchy indeed, as those times were heavily curtained behind severe secrecy, made necesary by the war and risks of espionage. Even people who were there at the time may not have all the facts at their disposal.

Articles submitted from members are always welcome and can be placed on an individual page in the main site with a title in the top menu. A basic wordproccessor such as wordpad if fine (don't frighten the Webmaster with your technology, okay!) Some photos may be inserted for effect too.

The Inn at Greatworth.

Everyone who served at RAF Greatworth, would have been here for a pint or three of Hookies. Well the old place has moved along with the times, but it still serves Hookies and it hasn't modernised so much really, it still keeps it's looks and character complete with it's Northamptonshire welcome.
